What are the subject pools at UZH?
UZH has a large number of pools of people interested in studies, which can be used for research purposes, known as open pools of prospective study participants. These individual pools decide for themselves for which research purposes and for what type of research the respective pool can be used.
In addition, the respective test subject pool also decides on any costs that may be incurred when using the pool.
All relevant information can be found at the respective test subject pools.
Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioral Economics
The Department of Economics hosts the Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioral Economics, offering excellent infrastructure for experimental research. Our facilities include several specialized laboratories (BLU Lab, DeSciL, and SNS Lab) equipped with networked computers that allow simultaneous and interactive testing of participants, enabling large-scale behavioral studies under full experimental control.
In addition, we operate a laboratory in a custom-built section of the MR Center at the University Hospital Zurich, equipped for experiments using fMRI, brain stimulation, EEG, behavioral measurements, and pharmacological interventions.
Research conducted in our laboratories spans a broad range of topics in behavioral economics, including fairness and reciprocity, team decision-making, auctions and markets, labor and health economics, organizational design, neuroeconomics, and pharmacological and genetic studies.
- Size of Study Pool: More than 10,000 people interested in participating in studies are currently registered.
- Conditions for the use of the Study Pools: All research conducted in our laboratories is subject to the following conditions:
- Experiments are conducted exclusively in the BLU Lab, DeSciL, or SNS Lab.
- A strict no-deception policy applies.
- Participant compensation follows the guidelines of the Econ Lab Handbook:
- Behavioral experiments:
- CHF 25–30/hour (incl. CHF 10 show-up fee); typically, CHF 30 for 1 hour, CHF 50 for 2 hours
- fMRI experiments: CHF 30 per hour plus an image of the participant’s brain
- Pharmacological and TMS studies: CHF 25–30 per hour plus a fixed risk premium (CHF 50–100, depending on the treatment)
- Overbooked participants must be compensated with CHF 20
- No commercial market research is permitted
- Data protection must be guaranteed and participants must remain anonymous.
Research is subject to laboratory availability and requires approval of the experimental content by the Department of Economics (ECON).
